What's on in the Muir
Autumn Issue out in October 2025
Writing Competition
Winner
We asked for a short story with the title 'One day in Summer'.
We are very proud to announce our first winner of the new Muir Matters writing competition for the under 16s. The story you can read in the Summer issue was written by Isabella Scrimgeour-Parsons, who is 10 years old.
Her story has an abundance of imagination, is very engaging and she used beautiful language. Congratulations!
Photography Competition
Winner
Congratulations to Aileen Thom, winner of the photography competition from our Spring issue. Her photo, taken at Loch nam Bonnach, makes a fabulous front cover for our Summer issue.
The winning picture is on display in the Quack Pot cafe at the hub, alongside the other top 4 entries, from John-Alasdair MacAulay (2nd), Dave Chandler (3rd), Aileen Thom (4th) and Bettie Thom (5th).

Writing & Photography Competition deadline for Summer issue:
Monday the 18th of August 2025
Writing Competition

Who doesn't love a good story?! We will have a regular creative writing competition and the next winning entry in each category will be published in the next issue. We will alternate between short stories and poems.
There are 2 categories; one for adults and a youth category for under 16s. The competition will be judged by the MM editorial team and will be judged based on how engaging the story is, how well written it its, how original and how well the title fits the story.
More information can be found in our latest Muir Matters issue.
Photography Competition

We will continue to run a photography competition in future issues of Muir Matters. For each issue we will have an experienced local photographer judging the competition. The winning photograph will be used for the front cover of the next issue! We will also be displaying the top 5 short-listed photos in the Quack Pot cafe in the Hub.
Our next judge will be Gary Williamson. Based in the Black Isle, Gary uses his paramotor (a powered paraglider) to access unique position in which he can capture the beauty of the area. His unusual perspective makes everyday objects look that little bit different. In addition to his aerial and landscape images, Gary attends a number of sporting events from which he has a considerable catalogue which you can view here: garywilliamson.co.uk.
